Description
In the online ESL-teaching gig, there are two main spaces in which we operate: in the classroom and in the feedback box. My first book, Loud and Clear taught you to write high-quality feedback. This all-new book, Above and Beyond, brings the same level of cultural insight and inspiration to the classroom:
✅ What are parents really looking for in class?
✅ What is the actual nature of “extension?”
✅ How does the language-learning process work?
✅ How can I possibly adapt to the student’s needs when I feel so constrained by the slides?
✅ How can I custom-tailor each class without the need for extra props or prep?
Go forth and rock your classroom!

I just got Ed’s book & it is a game changer! I am not done reading it yet but have already begun implementing his advice from the sections I have read. I got an awesome Feedback today from a mom who specifically referenced the extensions I did! It was amazing this mom noticed & pointed it out in her comment! Thanks, Ed! 🙂

I don’t know why I waited so long to purchase and read this 2nd book…shame on me! I’m on page 54, and it has already made a BIGGER difference in the way I understand the methodology of teaching ESL as a whole. It has greatly improved the way I understand the lessons we teach. I have a better grasp of how to help students in the short run and in the long-run. I also have a better idea of how to explain it all to the parents. Ed’s instruction has freed me from strictly “teaching the lessons to the student” and has propelled me into “teaching the student what he/she needs to learn English.” This is a profound shift in my teaching approach and has greatly enhanced the online classroom for me and my students. Thank you, Ed!!!!

Well Ed, you did it again. You taught me more in the first 5 minutes of reading your book that I had learned in the past 6 months of teaching and really researching and trying to educate myself about ESL as it relates to Chinese speakers. Also, as I read the introductory paragraphs something strange was happening….I was crying. I’m not a “crier”. But, you were able to take the efforts, feelings, human emotions, and education and roll it into one beautiful paragraph. Kudos!

This book is FANTASTIC! I noticed an immediate change in my teaching the day after reading it. It changed my entire outlook and philosophy on online ESL teaching. I feel a renewed sense of purpose and direction. I have been making stronger connections with my students and am feeling much more confident as a teacher. Thank you, Ed! 5 apples for you!

I purchased Ed Nace’s new book Above and Beyond and read half of it the first day! I was amazed at the subtle but significant difference in my teaching this morning after having read only half! I was teaching the “I swing on a swing” lesson and on the reward slide, instead of having my student place the toys in the cart, I told her to put them ON Meg’s head. We put things ON things throughout the lesson! I am a natural extender, but this was a more meaningful way to extend that stemmed from the thought that I was teaching the child, not the slides. By the end of the lesson, she knew what it meant not only to swing on a swing, but to put something ON something else ?. Thank you, Ed Nace, for taking the time to put this together! I look forward to reading the rest of it! It gave me a fresh perspective that was hugely helpful!

I’ve spent years leading professional development trainings and writing curriculum for the K-12 schools in my county. Despite my experience and available resources, I couldn’t find anything tailored to online ESL instructional best practices that aligned with my educational philosophy…until now. This book is filled with detailed examples of the challenges we face in the online classroom. Along with those anecdotes are helpful suggestions On how to overcome the small obstacles for big student rewards!
I highly recommend this book to both veteran and new teachers alike. If you’re looking to add substance to your teaching style, if you’re needing to enrich your lessons with meaningful extension, if you’re ready to make nuanced changes to your delivery, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU!

Your new book is awesome. THANK YOU for writing this. I only got about 30 pages read last night but that was enough that I taught differently this morning! Using the slides to teach instead of teaching the slides is genius! I can’t wait to finish this book! I give this book ?????!

Ed Nace You have saved me once again! I have been working since November to get a student’s level changed. This morning I taught his first class at the new level and felt so DISCOURAGED because the new level wasn’t low enough. 20 pages in…. “foundation repair”. Yes- I can do this!! Thanks! ??

Only a few pages in and it is already worth the price.

I just bought this book today and am already on page 40! This book has the best tips for becoming a great English teacher who will be in demand from the students and parents. Honestly I wish I had read this sooner. I know if I apply the ideas he teaches in this book, my classes will definitely improve and be different. I need to get it printed out and bound (as well as the extended version of his feedback book) to have for reference. Ed, you did us struggling ESL teachers a great service by writing this book in a fashion that makes one evaluate our teaching styles. Thank you!
