Description
In the online ESL-teaching gig, there are two main spaces in which we operate: in the classroom and in the feedback box. My first book, Loud and Clear taught you to write high-quality feedback. This all-new book, Above and Beyond, brings the same level of cultural insight and inspiration to the classroom:
✅ What are parents really looking for in class?
✅ What is the actual nature of “extension?”
✅ How does the language-learning process work?
✅ How can I possibly adapt to the student’s needs when I feel so constrained by the slides?
✅ How can I custom-tailor each class without the need for extra props or prep?
Go forth and rock your classroom!

I finally read Above and Beyond!! I know Loud and Clear backward and forward, and I honestly thought that this book would cover the same ground. I was wrong. It’s a different book, with a lot of ideas for teaching rather than ideas for communicating about the teaching. They go hand in hand, but I definitely learned a lot. By reading it and reflecting, I realized that I’m naturally great at extending with advanced students. It comes easily to me. I know what the next step is for them and how to get them there. But, I was teaching the beginning level learners all wrong! Well, I’ll say “not in the best way.” I was stressing them out, and stressing myself out, too. I teach almost exclusively older students, so when they struggle, it’s more stressful to them than it probably is for a level 1 kiddo. Tonight I taught one of my struggling students. I teach him Free Talk lessons, and all I’ve been able to see is everything that needs to be done. His pronunciation is awful. He doesn’t understand me even with TPR and props. He can’t do the sentence frames. His grammar is terrible. He is sweet, 13 years old, and tries hard, but we both dreaded class, not gonna lie. A couple of times, he’s left class in tears. No clue why they kept booking me. I certainly wouldn’t have. Tonight I actually had this stressed out kid laughing. We agreed that the goat had horns, so we drew horns on every other animal so we could talk about their “horns”, too. I also taught him the expression “No way!” After we drew the horns and said that the animal had horns, we would take turns asking, “Do _ have horns?” “No way!” It was the first time he has actually smiled and showed some of his personality. It was great to see his confidence bloom as we moved along. I would have never thought to do that, but my creativity was inspired by the book, along with my understanding of where the student is on his journey and how to move him forward a little. Thanks, Ed. I have 3 regulars who are older, but at a beginning level, and I’ve seen great progress in all of them in only a few weeks!

I absolutely love this book!!! I liked it so much I printed it out so that I could read it a second time and have it as a quick reference. I hate searching through documents on my phone. I LOVE all of his books. After purchasing the small book, which I read in a day, I immediately purchased this one and his expanded version of “Loud and Clear.” His experience having actually taught in China as an ESL teacher is invaluable, and he has a really great writing style.

I read Above and Beyond over my 5 days off. First class back today and mom comes to the camera after class to say, “Thank you, teacher! This class was so wonderful.” Cue my heart melting. I borrowed your tip of using the transitional slides in a UA for extensions. My early level 2 now knows how to exclaim “let’s begin!” Haha. Thanks, Ed.

I bought Above & Beyond on Sunday. I used some techniques in a Level 3 reading class Monday morning during the rewards. The student was answering my questions and it really bolstered his confidence. I saw he high-fived his Dad on the side after I turned my camera off! He was a new student so I am hoping he returns ? Thanks Ed for sharing your wealth of knowledge with all of us!

These books are remarkable! They have helped me so much with my feedback. I have learned about things I never even thought about in my feedback. Parents are loving it and it helps me explain things to parents better. Thank you for these great books! Well worth purchasing! I highly recommend them!

This book has helped me become a better teacher. I did not originally come from a teaching background and Ed’s tips and suggestions have helped me tremendously in my classrooms. The best part is I have learned how to have fun while teaching the kids so they can enjoy learning. I teach part time and have a great base of now regular students within a few months. My extensions aren’t mindless, but rather something that will help the students gain further knowledge of the English language!
